It is an outdoor gathering space with an undulating deck, benches and a stage. It was designed for the public to sit and have a quiet moment to look at the bay and also to be used by a local women’s empowerment group for speaking events and meetings. Located in West Oakland and adjacent to Emeryville, Mandela House currently provides 105 units of interim housing in a former Extended Stay America motel, with future plans to transition into permanent supportive housing. Through this, It plays a key role in Oakland’s broader strategy to rehouse individuals transitioning from encampments that the city is aggressively closing. Issues of dignity, the right to housing, affordability and equity are all central to this project. Our efforts this semester will be focused on designing and building a vibrant communal space for the residents of Mandela House. In partnership with current residents, students will create, iterate and build a design that ensures their needs, histories, and visions. This work will be complemented through investigations into the activist past of the Prescott Neighborhood/Wood Street and the structural inequities present. The garden is located in what is considered a food desert; there is a documented lack of access to healthy food affordable organic produce. In addition to growing and distributing fresh produce, the garden is a safe place where no violence is acceptable and is a sanctuary. The design and program of the gathering space is inspired by the history of food in the Bayview and Hunters Point neighborhoods. Before WWII, the hills and bays of this area were home to vegetable gardens, a shrimping industry, grazing lands and the meat industry. This rich and varied history of food growing, production and distribution is also bound to the many immigrant communities that have populated and cared for the land and its buildings. The UNITY pavilion and the NCH garden together aim to create a place that will honor and reintroduce this connection to the land. The design was derived from several community and youth workshops together with feedback from the NCH garden volunteers. Designed as a series of frames that look out onto the garden and the San Francisco Bay while providing shade, the pavilion provides respite and is a beacon at the top of the garden. With communal seating and a mobile kitchen table, the layout allows for community gatherings and cooking demonstrations.
 The construction of the pavilion was measured and tested on full scale prototypes. These models were tested for constructability, structural systems, aesthetics and function. The prototypes enabled a final design that was comfortable, elegant and flexible. place,&nbsp; we designed and developed an outdor furniture installation in an existing outdoor courtyard. During this process, we learned that residents wanted an active, intergenerational, and flexible space that allowed for relaxation, interactive play, and community events. Our final design incorporates a set of flexible, movable furniture that can be set up in different configurations. Intergenerational play, lounging, and socializing are emphasized through the design of different panels on the modular pieces. The colorful groundscape is coded to give clues for spatial use and provide a vibrant surface that complements the colors of the wall mural. Behind this was research focused on the notion of play, and its role as a multigenerational driver of joy, exercise, and community. This research was strengthened through workshops with noted spatial activists and industrial designers from the Bay Area. The new installation creates a vibrant gathering and imagination space for all the residents of this diverse building, especially the twenty-nine children residing here. The design incorporates social distancing through graphics and furniture component design and was installed during the Covid pandemic.&nbsp; The Bayview Commons Apartments is a diverse, affordable community in service since 2003, located in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood of San Francisco. AIAS AAU (American Institute of Architecture Students) participants designed and painted a mural in the courtyard in 2018. by the Met Life Company in 1941 that contains 2500 apartments alongside parks and courts. Working with the client and residents in a participatory process, students researched and designed a new gathering space for public events within an empty courtyard that was once a laundry drying yard. The final design is seating, tables, a bartop with sink and a shade structure. Designed as modules, the seating and tables can be reconfigured into scenarios to turn an empty coutryard into an outdoor living room, an event space, or simply a space to sit and work or eat. A landscape and ground mural complemented and supported the final design.&nbsp; But, the post pandemic landscape introduced issues on the client’s side, and funding and interest dried up. &nbsp; Happily, furniture was used in a lounge space at the AIA convention in San Francisco in 2023. By using an active school gym to house 80 family shelter beds and support services, this model allows families a means to transition to stable housing. The program requires a complex partnership between the school, a non-profit shelter operator, SFUSD, and San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing Operationally, the dual use of the school gym is difficult - during the day the gym is used for PE classes and at night it is used as a shelter. The daily set up and break-down of beds is labor intensive. To remedy this, students fabricated 80 folding beds on wheels with storage compartments incorporating the suggestions of the families at an emergency shelter. Through extensive 1:1 prototyping, students held themselves accountable to the families and developed a shared purpose to guide the process.
